Microneedling

Because microneedling uses no energy, it is sometimes treated as a minor spa-style service. It still breaks the skin, so cleanliness and the doctor's oversight matter. Many Gangnam menus add serums to it, and what is applied to open channels deserves a question.

How it works

A pen or roller carrying fine needles makes tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. The micro-injuries prompt a wound-healing response that may increase collagen and improve texture over weeks. Needle depth is adjusted to the area. The effect is mild to moderate, builds gradually across sessions and varies by person.

Who it may suit

  • Shallow acne scars
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Dull skin that needs a gentle stimulus
  • People who want a low-intensity option with brief recovery

The treatment day

  1. Consultation. The doctor examines skin, asks about active acne, cold sores, keloids and medicines, and sets a needle depth.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied and left for a period before the pen is used.
  3. Treatment. A new sterile needle cartridge is attached and the pen is moved over the skin in passes. Mild bleeding or redness is expected.
  4. Soothing. A calming product is applied and aftercare instructions are given.

Aftercare

  • Expect redness similar to mild sunburn for one to three days
  • Use only the gentle products the doctor approves
  • Apply sunscreen daily and avoid heavy makeup initially
  • Avoid scrubs, acids and retinoids for a few days
  • Report swelling that worsens, pus or fever

Things to know first

  • Redness, dryness, flaking and tiny scabs are common
  • Infection, uneven pigment and flare-ups of cold sores or acne can occur
  • Not recommended over active acne, open wounds, infections or in certain skin conditions
  • Products applied to freshly needled skin can cause reactions, so only approved ones should be used
  • Effects on deeper scars are limited and vary by person

What to check before booking microneedling in Gangnam

Start with hygiene and consumables. Each treatment should use a new, sterile needle cartridge, opened in front of you. Ask to see it sealed. Because the skin is broken, a clean setup, gloves and a proper skin prep are not optional extras. A clinic that handles these points confidently is showing the right habits.

Next, ask what is applied to the skin during and after the session. Serums, boosters or exosome-type products are sometimes added, and not every product is intended for use on needled skin. Ask for the product name, its manufacturer and whether it is approved for such use. Ask who operates the pen and how the depth was decided, since the needle length differs by area and is not a one-size setting.

A clear quote lists the sessions, the needle cartridge, any added products and the follow-up. Be cautious of promises that microneedling will erase deep scars or tighten significantly, since its effect is modest. Honest advice sets expectations of gradual change over several sessions and tells you which skin conditions mean waiting.

Microneedling: common questions

Is microneedling the same as microneedle RF?

No. Plain microneedling uses needles only, while microneedle RF also delivers heat through the needles. The latter is generally more intensive.

Is it fine to have products applied during the session?

Only if they are intended for use on needled skin. Ask what the product is and who makes it before agreeing.

How often can it be done?

Often about every four weeks for a series, varying by person. The doctor should adjust based on healing.
