Fraxel

Fraxel, from Solta Medical, is a non-ablative fractional laser; check which wavelength is planned and how many sessions that implies.

How it works

Fraxel is a non-ablative fractional laser system from Solta Medical, with 1550 nm and 1927 nm wavelengths. It heats microscopic columns of tissue without removing the surface, which prompts the skin to renew itself. The 1550 nm wavelength is generally associated with texture and scars, and the 1927 nm with surface pigment and sun damage. Several sessions are usual.

Good to know

  • Ask which wavelength is planned and what it targets.
  • Clarify the number of sessions and the interval, as this treatment is gradual.
  • Mention melasma history, recent sun exposure, and cold sores.
  • Redness, swelling, and a rough or bronzed look for a few days are expected; pigment change and infection are less common.

Checking a Fraxel treatment before you book

Fraxel is an established name, and fractional laser has become a loose term. Confirm whether the original system is used and whether the plan has one wavelength or both.

A non-ablative approach generally means a gentler recovery than ablative lasers, and also usually more sessions. A clinic should say so openly, so the total effort is clear.

Fraxel: common questions

Is Fraxel the same as CO2 fractional?

No. It is non-ablative, so it does not vaporize tissue, and downtime is usually shorter.

Does it help melasma?

The 1927 nm wavelength is used for some pigment concerns, but melasma can worsen with heat. The doctor should advise.

How long is the bronzed look?

Often a few days. The duration varies by settings and skin.
